A fine novel by an unjustly neglected English comic writer (1895-1941). Macdonell wrote a couple minor classics, “England, Their England” and “Autobiography of a Cad” in the 1930s, short stories and travel books, as well as a handful of crime novels in the 1920s (under the pseudonym ‘Neil Gordon’) and some historical studies, notably “Napoleon and his Marshalls”, 1934.
