McDonald’s novel about Syms Covington, man-servant to Charles Darwin on the famous “Beagle” voyage of scientific discovery. Included here is a fine copy of the paperback original literary magazine, Vintage Quarterly, #1, Autumn 1999, which carries, among other articles, an enlightening essay by McDonald on the writing of “Mr Darwin’s Shooter”, as well as a 7-page excerpt from the novel, which won the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award in 1999.
