Translated by Harriet de Onis. Cuban author’s major work, and his first book translated into English. Carpentier was a musicologist and radio scriptwriter. “The Lost Steps” concerns a musician’s search for primitive wisdom and his eventual decision to return to civilization. The UK edition precedes the much more common US edition. This copy has the scarce wrap-around band, with reviews by Edith Sitwell and J.P. Priestley. The portion of the spine covered by the band has remained bright yellow; the portion above has browned slightly.
