They were toymaker Matthew Boulton and his partner, James Watt, of steam-engine fame; the potter Josiah Wedgwood; the physican, poet, inventor and theorist, Erasmus Darwin; and Joseph Priestley, radical philosopher and discoverer of oxygen, among a handful of others.
