Ransome lived in Russia for some time before the 1917 Revolution, and there he collected the tales for his famous publication (in 1916) of “Old Peter’s Russian Tales”. The tales collected here were to be a successor to “Old Peter”, but wartime activities got in the way, and they appear in this collection for the first time, edited and introduced by Hugh Brogan, and illustrated in b/w by Faith Jaques.
